The good news is you don’t need to figure everything out immediately. The first day after a hailstorm isn’t about making repairs. It’s about staying safe, gathering a little information, and avoiding decisions you’ll regret later.
Start with What You Can See
Once the storm has moved through and it’s safe to head outside, take a slow walk around your property. The goal isn’t to inspect every inch of your roof. It’s simply to get a sense of how much of an impact the storm had. We never recommend climbing onto the roof after a hailstorm, and fortunately, you don’t have to.
Instead, pay attention to the things you can safely see from the ground. Dented gutters or downspouts, torn window screens, damaged landscaping, and hail marks on your siding can all tell part of the story. If your yard is covered in broken branches or stripped leaves, that’s another sign the hail may have been large enough to affect the roof as well.
While you’re walking around, take a few photos of anything that stands out. Even if you don’t end up filing an insurance claim, it’s helpful to have documentation of what your property looked like immediately after the storm.
Don’t Feel Pressured to Make Immediate Decisions
One of the biggest misconceptions after a hailstorm is that you need to make every decision that same day. In reality, the first 24 hours are less about finding a contractor and more about gathering information. It’s perfectly reasonable to take a little time to understand what happened before deciding what comes next.
That said, it’s also worth avoiding the opposite approach. We occasionally meet homeowners who assume everything is fine because they don’t see obvious damage from the driveway. Hail damage isn’t always easy to spot, and some of the most significant roof damage isn’t visible from the ground at all.
It’s also common for roofing companies to be working throughout the area after a major storm. Take your time, ask questions, and don’t feel obligated to commit to repairs simply because someone knocked on your door. A reputable contractor will be just as willing to inspect your roof and explain what they find without asking you to make an immediate decision.
If You Need an Inspection, Don’t Wait Too Long
Whether you decide to call your insurance company first or schedule a roof inspection first often comes down to personal preference. We’ve worked with homeowners who have done both, and either approach can work well.
The important thing is not letting weeks pass before taking the next step. If there is damage, having it documented while the storm is still recent can make the insurance process much smoother. It also gives you a clearer picture of what, if anything, actually needs to be repaired before the next round of severe weather moves through.
